The Mahjong Boom Just Went Official — Parks, Libraries, and Vegas Are All In

Turns out the mahjong thing isn’t staying in our group chats. This summer it’s showing up in city park budgets, library calendars, and casino ballrooms, which honestly feels like the moment a hobby stops being a hobby and starts being A Thing.

Cities are putting it in the parks budget now. Take L.A. County. Parks and Rec just rolled out a mahjong series across the county, working with a club called Common Ground Mahjong that a Rowland Heights woman named Jay Zhao started about a year ago, mostly because she got sick of waiting weeks between games with her friends. Now the county’s putting it in the parks system. That’s the part that gets me — this isn’t just something we’re doing at each other’s kitchen tables anymore. It’s turning into actual public programming, the same way pickleball courts started multiplying a few summers ago.

Libraries have caught on too. Right now, in places as different as Hawaii and upstate New York, you can walk into a beginner mahjong class at your local library most Saturdays this summer. No sign-up required half the time. Just show up. It’s become one of those low-key “meet your neighbors” programs nobody’s really advertising but everybody’s finding anyway.

And there’s real money in it now, too. I did not expect that part. A charity tournament is happening this weekend at the Paradise Center on Longboat Key, Florida, with proceeds going toward the center’s free summer programs. Bigger picture: Destination Mah Jongg just announced its 2026 World Championship for this October at the Paris Las Vegas — they’re calling it the largest prize payout in American Mah Jongg history and it has SOLD OUT! There’s also an International Mahjong Night coming up July 30 in New York, with tile displays and equipment so people can see what the game even looks like before they try it.

So no, this isn’t a fad that peaked. If anything it’s still gaining ground — from your library’s community room all the way to a Vegas ballroom with real prize money on the table. If you’ve been curious but haven’t sat down at a table yet, this might be the easiest summer to start. There’s probably a free beginner session near you this weekend, and you don’t need to know a single rule to walk in.
