Puerto Rico with Kids: Your Ultimate Island Adventure Itinerary

We skipped the resorts for something better: a beautiful Airbnb house tucked into Guánica, just five minutes from Playa Caña Gorda (beach), where we spent our first beach day. This is the move if you want that perfect balance of quiet, local, convenient access to beach, without the price tag or crowds of a big resort. It’s the kind of home base that lets you actually relax between beach days, with easy access to everything the southern coast has to offer. We made sure our Airbnb had a pool because we went to PR in the hottest season — summer.

Just down the road from home base, Playa la Jungla is the kind of beach that makes mornings easy. Calm, shallow water and a laid-back vibe make it a natural fit for younger kids. No big waves to worry about, no crowds to fight for a good spot (unless it’s a weekend). Pack a cooler, stake out a shady patch, and let the day unfold slowly.

Worth the drive north to Aguadilla, Crash Boat Beach is the postcard stop on this itinerary. Turquoise water, colorful fishing boats lining the shore and enough energy for older kids who want to swim, snorkel or just people watch. It’s busier than Playa la Jungle with music and food and drink vendors, but the payoff is more of the island’s culture.

Time for a change of pace. A golf cart tour through Viejo (Old) San Juan turns sightseeing into an adventure the kids will actually ask for. Cruise past colorful colonial buildings, cobblestone streets and centuries-old fortresses without the strain of a full day on foot. It’s history made fun at a pace that works for the whole family. If you love Bad Bunny or Luis Fonsi ask to see some of the locations featured in their music videos. Those make for Instagram-able moments.

Puerto Rico’s second city brings the culture. Ponce’s Spanish colonial architecture, the iconic red-and-black firehouse (Parque de Bombas) in Plaza Las Delicias, and a walkable downtown make it an easy, low-stress day trip. It’s a nice contrast to all that beach time. It’s a chance to slow down and soak in some island history. Don’t forget to stop at King’s Cream for a delicious coconut or guanabana (soursop) ice cream.

Close out the trip with a shift from coast to mountains. A hike at Finca Puerco Suelto (off of highway 149) trades sand for trails, with lush greenery and island views that remind you just how much Puerto Rico has to offer beyond its beaches. It is the perfect last adventure. You will sweat and you will see lots of photo-ready scenery. Make sure you take dips in the natural, clean watering holes. The water is refreshing.
